LaCie External Drive Data Recovery
If a LaCie drive no longer mounts, keeps disconnecting, or begins clicking or beeping, repeated connection attempts can make a storage problem worse. Stop using the drive and note what changed before the failure.

Stop Reconnecting the Drive
A project deadline is not a reason to keep testing unstable media. Until the drive has been assessed:
- Do not initialize, erase, repartition, or reformat a volume that the computer cannot read normally.
- Do not run Disk Utility First Aid, CHKDSK, recovery software, or long verification scans repeatedly.
- Stop powering a drive that clicks, beeps, spins up and down, disappears, or becomes unusually hot.
- Do not open the external enclosure or a sealed hard drive, swap circuit boards, or attempt an improvised connector repair.
- If the unit was dropped, exposed to liquid, or damaged by a power event, disconnect it and do not keep testing cables.
- For a multi-drive enclosure, preserve every member disk in its original bay and do not accept a rebuild or reinitialization prompt.
Keep the enclosure, power supply, cables, adapters, and removed disks together. Record the model, connection, host computer, operating system, error, sounds, and last normal use.
One Symptom, Several Possible Failure Points
“Not mounting” describes what the computer sees, not what failed. An external storage path has several layers:
- the computer’s USB or Thunderbolt port;
- the cable and power supply;
- the enclosure and its bridge electronics;
- the internal hard drive or solid-state storage;
- the partition and filesystem; and
- on a multi-drive unit, the member disks and array configuration.
Connection checks that are reasonable for healthy media are not a recovery plan for a clicking, damaged, or intermittent drive. The evaluation identifies the affected layer without assuming the enclosure is the problem.
External Hard Drives, SSDs, and Creative Work
A LaCie device may hold photo libraries, video projects, audio sessions, design files, archives, or client deliverables. Tell Sherlock which folders, dates, or file types matter most. That defines the requested result; it does not guarantee a file is recoverable.
External hard drive cases
A mechanical drive can have read errors, damaged filesystem structures, electronic trouble, or a physical failure. Clicking, grinding, repeated spin-up, severe slowness, and intermittent detection are reasons to stop powering it. See Hard Drive Recovery for the related service path.
External SSD cases
An SSD has no moving parts, but it still depends on flash memory, a controller, firmware, power, and a usable interface. It may disappear, report the wrong capacity, become read-only, or leave a volume inaccessible. Formatting, firmware updates, and continued writes can reduce the options. USB and Thunderbolt describe how the storage connects; they do not reveal whether the failure is inside the cable, enclosure, media, or filesystem. Preserve any encryption password or recovery information. Sherlock does not promise to bypass encryption or account controls.
Multi-Drive LaCie Storage
A multi-drive enclosure may use mirroring, striping, parity, concatenation, or another layout. If one member fails, a rebuild attempt can write across the remaining disks. If several disks have been removed, their original bay order and the sequence of events may be essential.
Power the unit down and keep every member in place. If disks were already removed, preserve their existing bay labels and order; do not remove or reconnect them just to label them. Do not test individual disks as blank volumes or build a new array. Sherlock will determine whether the case should follow the RAID Recovery process after reviewing the model and configuration.
A Drive Used on Mac or Windows
The same LaCie enclosure can behave differently depending on the host computer, filesystem, adapters, and encryption. A Windows prompt to initialize a Mac-used drive does not mean the disk is empty. Likewise, repeated repair attempts on a Mac can change filesystem structures that may still contain useful information.

How a LaCie Recovery Case Moves Forward
1. Describe the complete storage setup
Call with the model, capacity, USB or Thunderbolt connection, power supply, host computer, symptoms, recent damage, prior repair attempts, and the folders that matter most. For multi-drive storage, include the number of disks and original bay order.
2. Confirm what should come to the lab
Some cases require the complete enclosure, power adapter, and cables because the connection path or configuration is part of the problem. Other cases may center on the internal media. Do not disassemble the unit first; intake will explain what to bring or ship.
3. Receive an evaluation and firm quote
Sherlock evaluates the submitted media to diagnose the problem and determine whether recovery work is appropriate. A firm quote is provided before approved work begins. A diagnostic fee may apply, so the evaluation must not be advertised as free. The condition of the storage determines the work; no fixed result or turnaround is promised in advance.
4. Review the recovery result
If no requested files are recovered, there is no recovery fee, although a diagnostic fee may still apply. If the result is partial, the customer may accept it at the quoted price or decline it without a recovery fee. Read Sherlock’s Service Policy before authorizing work.

Why is my LaCie drive not mounting?
The cause could be the cable, power supply, enclosure electronics, internal storage, partition, filesystem, encryption, or a multi-drive configuration. “Not mounting” alone is not enough to diagnose the failure.
Should I bring the enclosure with the drive?
Call with the full model before removing anything. The enclosure, power adapter, cable, and bay order may be relevant. Sherlock will explain which components are needed for evaluation.
Can you evaluate a LaCie SSD or multi-drive unit?
Those devices may be appropriate for evaluation when the exact model, media, and configuration are confirmed. Do not rebuild a multi-drive unit or update SSD firmware before intake.
Should I run Disk Utility or initialize the drive?
No if the data matters and the drive is unreadable or unstable. Initialization writes new information, and repeated repair utilities can change filesystem structures. Stop and ask before approving either action.
Can a LaCie drive used on a Mac be recovered?
Possibly, depending on the device, filesystem, encryption, damage, and previous activity. Preserve the drive and tell Sherlock which Mac and operating system last accessed it.
