Hitachi and HGST Hard Drive Data Recovery
A Hitachi or HGST hard drive that clicks, vanishes from the computer, or takes minutes to open is warning you to stop. Repeated starts and long scans can turn a limited media problem into additional damage.

Stop Powering a Failing Drive
If the files matter, protect the drive before trying to prove that it has failed. Do not:
- restart a clicking, grinding, beeping, or repeatedly spinning drive;
- initialize, format, repartition, or accept an operating-system repair prompt;
- run CHKDSK, Disk Utility First Aid, surface tests, or recovery software against unstable media;
- open a sealed hard drive, swap circuit boards, freeze it, tap it, or attempt another improvised repair;
- write new files to a drive after deletion, formatting, or a missing-partition event; or
- separate disks from a server, NAS, or RAID without recording their original bay order.
Disconnect an external drive from power. If the drive came from a laptop, desktop, server, or enclosure, keep the computer, adapter, cables, and power supply available. Write down the last normal use, messages shown, unusual sounds, liquid or impact damage, and every recovery attempt already made.
What a Hitachi or HGST Failure Can Look Like
The same symptom can have different causes. A drive may not appear in the operating system because of an enclosure, connection, electronics, firmware, mechanical, partition, or filesystem problem. A correct diagnosis comes before a recovery decision.
Common cases include:
- a drive that is not detected, reports the wrong capacity, or appears only intermittently;
- clicking, repeated spin-up, grinding, or no normal spin activity;
- severe slowness, read errors, bad sectors, freezes, or I/O errors;
- an inaccessible partition, missing volume, accidental format, or deleted files;
- an external enclosure that no longer mounts through USB; and
- a computer that will not boot even though its important files remain on the internal drive.

Logical Problems and Physical Problems Need Different Handling
Logical or filesystem damage
A drive may still operate normally while its partition, directory structures, or files are damaged. Deletion, formatting, operating-system trouble, and an interrupted write can produce this kind of case. Continuing to use the drive may overwrite older data, so stop writes even when the hardware sounds normal.
Electronic or mechanical failure
A magnetic hard drive depends on its electronics, firmware, motor, heads, and platter surfaces working together. Clicking, repeated spin attempts, impact damage, or rapid deterioration suggests that ordinary software is not an appropriate first step. Leave the sealed assembly closed; opening it as a test can add contamination or mechanical risk.
No symptom by itself proves that particular files can be recovered. Sherlock evaluates the actual media and asks which folders or file types are most important before quoting work.
Drives From Computers, Enclosures, and Arrays
Hitachi and HGST labels appear on drives used in more than one setting. Tell us where the disk was installed and preserve the complete setup when possible.
Laptop or desktop drives
If a computer no longer starts, the operating-system failure and the storage failure are not automatically the same thing. Stop repeated boot attempts if the drive is slow, disappears, or makes unusual sounds. Internal portable-computer cases may also fit Laptop Data Recovery.
External hard drives
A USB enclosure adds a cable, power supply, and bridge electronics to the path. Do not assume that removing the internal disk is harmless. Call with the complete model first; Sherlock will explain whether to submit the enclosure, adapter, and cables with the media.
Server, NAS, and RAID members
One Hitachi or HGST disk may be part of a larger storage set. Do not rebuild the array, replace a disk experimentally, or let a controller initialize the members. Keep every disk together and record its bay position. Depending on the system, the case may belong under Server Recovery or RAID Recovery.
How the Evaluation and Recovery Process Works
1. Tell us what happened
Provide the label information, capacity, device or enclosure it came from, symptoms, damage, prior attempts, and the files that matter most. If another shop opened or worked on the drive, say so; that history changes the evaluation.
2. Confirm what to submit
Intake will explain whether the drive alone or the complete host system is appropriate. For external and multi-drive storage, original power supplies, adapters, cables, and bay order may matter. Do not disassemble the setup before asking.
3. Review the evaluation and firm quote
Sherlock diagnoses the submitted media and determines whether recovery work is appropriate. You receive a firm quote before approved work begins. A diagnostic fee may apply, so the evaluation must not be described as free. Condition and prior damage prevent a fixed outcome or turnaround from being promised in advance.
4. Decide based on the result
If no requested files are recovered, there is no recovery fee, although a diagnostic fee may still apply. If recovery is partial, you may accept the result at the quoted price or decline it without a recovery fee. Review the current Service Policy before authorizing work.

Are Hitachi and HGST drives handled as the same brand?
Both names may appear on legacy drive labels, but model, interface, media type, and condition are more important than the logo. Give Sherlock the complete label information so intake can confirm scope.
Can you evaluate a clicking or undetected drive?
Potentially, after the exact media and condition are reviewed. Stop powering a clicking or intermittent drive; repeated attempts can add platter or head damage.
Should I remove the disk from its external enclosure?
Not before speaking with intake. The enclosure electronics, power supply, adapter, and connection history may be relevant, and disassembly can remove useful context.
What if the drive came from a laptop or server?
Preserve the host details. For an array, keep all member disks together in their original order and do not rebuild. Sherlock will route the case to the appropriate service.
Can you look at a drive another company already attempted?
Call and describe exactly what was done. Prior software scans, board work, enclosure removal, or opening of the sealed drive may affect both options and risk, but the media can still be evaluated for current scope.
Will third-party recovery preserve my warranty?
Sherlock does not make warranty determinations and does not claim Hitachi or HGST authorization. Check any current warranty terms with the responsible manufacturer or seller before approving third-party work.
